Seferihisar, which is one of the central districts of Izmir, is a lovely town for relaxation and settlement for its crystal clear coasts and bays, just nearby a metropolis, being located 45 km. to the centrum of Konak. Besides, Seferihisar is the 129th town in the world among other towns from 19 countries and is the first and the only one in Turkey, which was certified as a Cittaslow. There are several historical hypotheses about the origins of the town. According to one of those; Seferihisar was established as a military base by Tysaferin, a Roman general, for the accommodation of his soldiers during the navy battle between the Roman navy and the naval forces of Carthage by Teos and off Myonnessos upon the retreat of Hannibal of Carthage, who was defeated by Rome in the 3rd Punic War, to Anatolia in order to seek refuge in Seleucians of Syria, and was thereupon called Tysaferinopolis. The oldest settlement within the borders of Seferihisar is TEOS, being one of the 12 major Ionian sites in Anatolia and Aegean islands, and is known to have been established by the Cretans, who escaped from the Akkadians, nearly in 2000 BC and was ruled as a Karian city. Even though a comprehensive excavation work has not been performed about the ancient site of TEOS; the findings of the superficial studies performed in 1964 was adequate to turn the area into an “Open Air Museum”. The location, where was anciently known as Myonnessos, situated at 1 km on the north of Doganbey bay of Seferihisar, is currently known as Cifitkalesi (Cifte kale) or Sican adası (Rats’ island). The island, which is mentioned to have been the center of the artists of Dionysos in the ancient times, is connected to the mainland by means of an ancient path on the south that is, now, under 25 – 30 cm. deep water. The town with such a prosperous historical background as mentioned above has recently been certified as the 129th Slow City of the World, being the first in Turkey, and has, thereby, been declared worldwide to be a healthy and habitable city of peace and tranquility. CITTASLOW ( Slow City ): The initiative, which emerged in Barolo, Italy against American fast food style in 1986, evolved into an international motion in Paris, in 1989. The towns, which are certified as Slow Cities, are so certified for having successfully managed to integrate the traditional lifestyle with the conveniences and facilities of modern life and technology within the concept of “healthy environment – healthy life”. Seferihisar has thus become one of the rare holiday resorts of Turkey and the World for its rich tourism potential (the sea - the natural beauties - the thermal springs), fishery, Olive Oil, Tangerine, Wine and Grape.
